The Maine Public Utilities Commission is excited to share with you the details of a new project to promote energy efficiency and clean energy.

In order to better address a growing interest and demand for clean energy alternatives as well as energy conservation, the PUC has developed a social awareness campaign entitled Carbon Free Homes, which provides straightforward information to the public on how to reduce their home energy use and switch to clean energy.

Carbon Free Homes features a user-friendly website that allows people to calculate the carbon emissions that result from their home electricity and heating use.

This calculation will lead to a solution page, which offers simple energy efficient steps the user can take to reduce their overall carbon emissions. These steps include changing to compact fluorescent light bulbs, changing their home energy use (like turning down the thermostat by 2 degrees), and selecting energy efficient appliances. After the user commits to some or all of the energy efficiency steps, they are then provided with easy to understand information and instructions on how to switch from traditional carbon emitting energy to a clean energy source. The two types of clean energy available include renewable energy credits (which must be Green-e certified) and clean supply. When the user commits to one of the clean energy sources, they will receive a Carbon Free Home decal. The PUC will hold a raffle offering an exciting prize at every thousand homes registered.

Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to contact the PUC if they are interested in endorsing one or all of the product choices. In addition, qualifying electricity and certificate suppliers can apply with the PUC to be listed as one of the featured clean energy products.

The PUC is particularly excited about this project as it provides a well supported Maine based solution for people interested or concerned about global warming and carbon pollution. If you have an organization or group that is interested in working towards a solution for global warming and would like to be a part of this exciting campaign, please contact the PUC.
