Efficiency Maine invites applications for a Wind Turbine Site Survey from qualified applicants with proposed sites within the State of Maine. The Site Survey provides qualified applicants with a preliminary assessment of the potential for wind generation at a specific site including average wind speed and expected capacity factor. The goal of the Wind Site Survey is to assist applicants in determining if sites are appropriate for a wind project. The Wind Turbine Site Survey assesses the potential for small wind projects designed primarily to serve on-site load, as well as larger multi-turbine projects intended to export power. In either case, the facility should have a nameplate capacity of at least 500kW. Eligible participants include Maine-based schools, communities, non-profit organizations and businesses. Residential applications are not eligible.
Eligible Applicants/Projects
- Maine-based schools, communities, non-profit organizations and businesses. Residential applications are not eligible. Sites to be surveyed should have an estimated wind speed of 13.4 mph (6.0 m/s) or greater at a 70 meter height based on True Wind measurements. For wind speeds lower than 13.4 mph, presence of a large local electrical load is preferable.
- In either case, the facility should have a nameplate capacity of at least 500kW.
- Applicant must show that they have the intention and the means to establish a working wind turbine at the location if the study proves the site to be of sufficient wind capacity.

SOLAR POWER HEATS UP MAINE’S BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT New Renewable Energy Resources Provide Maine Businesses Incentives & Information
BRUNSWICK, ME-—December 14, 2007—The Maine Energy Investment Corporation (MEIC) announces two exciting new opportunities available for Maine businesses looking to reduce energy costs and lessen their carbon footprint through solar power. Simultaneously launching an online tool that estimates energy consumption, along with the introduction of a statewide grant program that defrays the cost of solar power installations; MEIC strives to innovate Maine’s business economy by increasing accessibility to renewable energy resources.
“These new tools remove two common barriers to implementing effective solar power in Maine: Economics and Education,” says Chuck Hazzard, Executive Director of MEIC. “Through launching economic incentives and educational platforms, we hope to demonstrate that Maine businesses can be on the forefront of an exciting solar renaissance.”
How MEIC Is Removing These Two Common Barriers:
ECONOMICS
The Maine Energy Investment Corporation is actively accepting proposals for the PV Reinvestment Fund (PVRF). The PVRF grant award helps small Maine businesses and non-profits with the purchase of a photovoltaic (PV) system; a solar power technology that converts light from the sun directly into electricity.
Awards, based on the size of the PV installation, are presented for $1 per watt of new solar capacity with a maximum grant of 3kW or $3,000. Additionally beneficial, the PVRF grant may also be used along with applicable State and federal solar incentives.
Applications for this grant cycle are due January 31, 2008 with award recipients being announced March 1, 2008. To be eligible, grant applicants must have fewer than 50 employees and less than $5 million in annual revenue. An overview of the grant program and application can be found online at www.RenewMaine.org/solar/MiniGrants.html. (Note: The ‘s’ in solar must be under-case within the web address.)
EDUCATION
The Maine Energy Investment Corporation developed and recently launched SolarME.org. A web-based educational tool, SolarME calculates the energy consumption of small to medium-sized businesses through a step-by-step series of business-specific questions. With the information provided, SolarME then offers recommendations on solar thermal/electric systems based on its automated computations.
For instance, a restaurant is asked how many loads of dishes they do a day as a method to calculate hot water consumption; which is then converted into energy use. By answering simple questions such as this on SolarME.org, businesses form the basis for their suggested solar thermal or electric system. The recommendations are then provided, including system size, costs, payback and breakeven period, carbon footprint reduction and other environmental and economic benefits.
Helping to expand Maine’s solar energy sector, MEIC developed the interactive calculator with financing support from the Maine Technology Institute, the State’s leading agency for providing research and development assistance to the private sector. Maine businesses can calculate their energy requirements at www.SolarME.org, and expand the renewable energy sector by increasing their own solar technology use.
Maine Energy Investment Corporation (MEIC) is a Brunswick-based 501(c)3 non-profit, conducting public education and market development programs on a range of clean energy technologies, including green power, biodiesel and solar. The mission of MEIC is to \"mainestream\" renewable energy, making cleaner, healthier and homegrown fuel and electricity available to all Mainers.
