Attention Allies! Time to get educated about:

EMC Motors
Big savings in small packages

The Efficiency Maine Business program offers substantial prescriptive incentives to companies that switch to Electronically Commutated Motors (ECMs) for HVAC and refrigeration fans:

  • $20 for the installation of ECM motors in refrigerated display cases; and
  • $50 for installation in walk-in cooler evaporators.

ECMs offer a more efficient alternative to fractional horsepower shaded pole motors (savings of up to 67%) or permanent split capacitor (PSC) motors (savings of up to 33%). In a typical cooler equipped with two 1/5 HP evaporator fans, replacing shaded pole motors with ECM units would produce annual savings of around 800 kWh or about $100 per year, based on an average cost of 13¢ per kWh.

Manufacturers continue to improve designs and produce larger versions of the ECM, including 1/3, 1/2, 3/4 and even 1 HP models. In addition, they have solved a chronic failure issue related to moisture penetrating the motor housing. These factors have led to expanded applications, including outdoor condenser fans for HVAC and refrigeration equipment, and circulation pumps for hydronic heating systems.

Savings numbers referenced above are from a July 2006 study by the Food Service Technology Center. A related article is available at:www.fishnick.com/publications/appliancereports/refrigeration/GE_ECM_revised.pdf

Show them the money
Offer your customers a "Savings Calculator"

Picture of CFL with $100 bill tucked in itThe bottom line for customers considering new, energy-efficient lighting and other equipment is "how much money will I save?" Helping them answer that question can help you secure more projects and build sales.

One Program Ally that has been able to do this is CED Gilman Electric, which offers electricians a spreadsheet that calculates the payback on new fixtures and other products they are proposing to install at their customers’ facilities. All the electrician or end-user needs to do is plug in the specs, quantity and operating hours of each new fixture, as well as any applicable Efficiency Maine incentives; the spreadsheet will then show the annual operating costs of the old vs. new fixtures, relamping costs and the payback timeframe.

If you are interested in offering a “Savings Calculator” to your customers, contact Efficiency Maine and we’ll help you develop your own.
